Always in Beta Lifestyle with New Balance

NB2

Consideration was provided by New Balance

I’ve always been inspired by women with stories of challenge and triumph. One of my first and favorite books I ever read was called, “Don’t You Dare Give Up,” a book about a gymnast who was paralyzed doing the sport she loved, but out of her tragedy she reinvented herself, and continued to inspire and work in other ways. I am a student of personal development. I am constantly looking to improve my lifestyle in so many ways, and always looking for something that can make just that 1% change. I am “always in beta.”

“Always in Beta. Beta is a state of relentless improvement. Where there is no finish line to what’s possible. We dream. We wake up. And improve upon yesterday.”

I am teaming up with New Balance to promote women who also live the “Always in Beta” Lifestyle. The new Fall Catalog is packed with awesome new gear, but also lots of women’s stories that will inspire you, push you, and motivate you!

NB1

If you download the Blippar App, you can Blipp the page to see awesome content, videos and get to know the NB Women and their stories in a really cool way!   I was obsessed with this new collection, especially the colors and feel of the NB Ice Collection!   The contrast of the blues and bright yellows makes me feel unstoppable!!

NB2

The Capris have an awesome, wide and flattering waistband and feel amazing on my skin.

NB3

Let’s talk bras. Let’s get real here, sports bras are my best friend, but I don’t always like how they can smash everything and make me look like I wasted $4000 on a boob job (hahaha) The “Tenderly Obsessive” bra is seriously genius. I need one for every day of the week.

NB4

First, it’s cute and matches my hot shorts. (Bonus) There is a soft, shaped, cup on each side, with a nice bit of padding for smoothness (but not those awful removable pads that bunch up and you can never fit back in!!) It’s comfortable, stylish and gives great support and lift. #winner Speaking of shorts. I’ve never been a shorts kind of girl. Mostly because I was too worried about things being squeezed and creating more bulges and bumps than necessary. The Premium Performance Hot Shorts are so flattering, with the wide waistband, great coverage, and they stay put when running or stretching.

NB5

Last, it’s fall, and I LOVE the weather and cozy, soft sweaters, jackets and windbreakers. New Balance nailed it with the Heat En Route Jacket; it’s gorgeous, comfy, has the fun thumbholes that I love and feels so soft!

NB6

I’m so excited for fall hiking, long walks, trail running and pumpkin lattes and of course, Always Living in Beta. What are you excited for this fall and what pushes you to always live the Beta Lifestyle?     WE THE WOMEN of New Balance have created this collection of fitness apparel and footwear inspired by our shared LOVE OF SPORT, drive to discover what’s next, and passion for WHAT’S POSSIBLE. Welcome to NB WOMEN where every tight fits right, every layer works hard, and every shoes lets you moved with perfect freedom. Take a look and find WHAT YOU LOVE. www.newbalance.com

How to make time for healthy activities every day

Maybe you’ve noticed, or maybe you haven’t been around me long enough to notice, but I have made a huge, huge shift in the way I do fitness.

I have started to really look inside and do what feels right to me.

I used to be this hard-core, “no excuses” maniac, who didn’t believe that anyone who wanted something couldn’t go out and get it!! (I still believe that if you want something you can make it happen)

However, I now have realized, the hard way, that too much pushing, not enough ALLOWING can pretty much, well, get your panties in a bunch!

You can become no-fun, too serious, and actually less healthy!!

(ain’t nobody got time for that!!)

There is a big world out there and all kinds of people. There are all kinds of fitness and all kinds of food and ways to eat and stay healthy and active.

I actually took nearly TWO FULL YEARS off of what most people would consider “working out”… at least in the sense of how I used to work out.

I decided, it was best for me, to just make time for healthy activity.

Some of that actually meant: RESTING.

When I was overworked, tired, sick and sore, in the past, I would just tell myself to “suck it up”

This ultimately led to burn out and a whole bunch of hormonal rebounds.

Ultimately, just staying active has helped me maintain my physique, my relationships and my sanity!

I’m excited to team up with Stayfree® to share how I am able to stay calm, cool, and collected while staying active.

Here are some of my best tips on making time for healthy activities:

  • Think outside the box!! – we think we have to “go to the gym” to have a workout. Not so!! I started doing a lot more from home– climbing the stairs to my apartments 25 times and then some push-ups on the counter– a little goes a long way!
  • Opposite Day Workout – sometimes, we have SO much stress in our lives- work, kids, traffic, etc. the last thing we need is another high intensity workout to raise cortisol even MORE. Take a walk. Take a yoga class in person or online. Breathe and let go.
  • Use your breaks wisely– if there is little time between leaving work, picking up one child, dropping off another, etc. Make those water breaks or lunch breaks count!! Walking lunges, parking far away, a few squats while waiting on hold. Make the extra minutes count!
  • PLAY – My newest, most fun way to get some activity in, is to blast Pandora and dance!! Playing is so fun and laughing is the best ab workout I have found! Make life and fitness enjoyable and it will be easy!

What are some ways that you stay calm, cool and connected during your busy life?

“What do you want for Christmas?”

I always HATED that question.
I’m not good at coming up with what I want, but then again, I make an amazon wish list all year long.
So, I decided to see what was on my list, but also some of the cool things I have been using all year that you may want to ask for or get for your other fitness girl friends.

BOOKS

I admit it, I am a personal development junkie. I have had to reprogram many years of BS, so I’m always looking to keep my thoughts toward positive and I also love to continue learning. I love books about health and fitness and about leadership too. Here are some of my favorites and some on my wish list

The Slight Edge (must read for everyone.)

SLIGHTEDGE

fitness, health, business, relationships.. here is the answer. Easy Read too.

The Miracle Morning— I have NOT yet read this book, but I am always trying to get up earlier and make my mornings better (I’m NOT a morning person) so I really want to read this and have a better morning routine. Plus… I love miracles :)
I also heard a podcast interview with the author and I was really impressed… so there’s that.

AND you can get 15% off by using the code: danny15 at checkout.. SWEET!!

FLIP BELTFLIPBELT2

Ninja Professional Blender or a Vitamix — ok.. so I can’t LIVE without my blenders. LOVE smoothies and of course I never hear complaints about the Vitamix, the cost can be prohibitive. I LOVE my Ninja, just be careful, those blades are sharp!!
It is a MUST-HAVE for a healthy lifestyle!!

YUR

Bodyworks Ball— this little gym bag gadget is amazing!! I’m always getting knots in my shoulder blades which are SO hard to reach. I used to lie on the ground on a ball, but gosh darn it, sometimes getting on the floor is a little… questionable?
So this cool ball you can toss over your shoulder and get to those hard to reach places. There are a ton of great uses.

BODYWORKS

MODERE Laundry Pods— I know this is kind of random, but someone sent these to me as a gift, and since we have been living in the RV and going to a lot of laudromats, you have no idea how convenient these are!! They smell AMAZING, are very portable and efficient. I need more!!

6 Morning Habits That Will Set You Up For a Wildly Alive Day

Wildly Alive Morning Image (1)

Wildly Alive Morning Image (1)** guest post

Something I hear from my clients often is that around two or three every afternoon, they start to

feel exhausted. They feel worn down, and they reach for some afternoon caffeine or sugar to

perk them up. Hours later, they feel exhausted again. It’s a vicious cycle. I tell them a secret

I’m here to let you in on today –

If you’re feeling worn out every afternoon, it’s because you’re starting your morning off in fight or

flight mode! Think about it – you wake up, you check your phone, and you rush around getting

ready while you run over your mental checklist of all the things you need to get finished that day.

You feel stressed and defeated before you even walk out the door!

Here’s the thing – the first hour of your day sets the tone for how your entire day will go! You

want to feel productive? Have energy for that post-work workout? Avoid sugar cravings in the

afternoon? The key is setting yourself up for a wildly alive day within minutes of waking up.

Here’s how both my coaching clients and myself start our days off on the best possible tone –

Cuddle your loved ones

When your alarm goes off, spend a few moments snuggling with your partner, your pets, your

kids – whoever you share a bed with! Wake up slowly, soak in the love of the people you share

your home with, and be thankful.

Talk with the Universe

Spend a few moments visualizing how you’d like your day to go. Say some prayers for yourself

and others. Mentally review all of the things you have to be grateful for. In my program, my

clients make goal cards that I encourage them to review at this time, but you can do the same

thing by spending time thinking about what your long term goals are, and what small actions you

can take today to reach them. It’s all about putting good juju out for yourself and the people you

love!

Keep your phone out of reach

It only adds stress to your morning to begin checking email, Facebook and text messages as

soon as you wake up. Wait until you’ve moved through your morning routine and are feeling

nourished, reenergized and ready to face the day before looking at a screen.

Boil a pot of water

Instead of jumping right into your morning coffee drinking, boil some hot water and add a slice of

fresh lemon. Hot lemon water is a soothing, detoxifying way to get your body moving every

morning. For an added detoxifying boost, add some cayenne pepper to the mix.

Make breakfast a priority

After going without food for 8-10 hours, your body needs to be refueled! I tell my clients to focus

on eating a healthy, nourishing breakfast within ninety minutes of waking up. If you wait much

longer, your body will begin craving sugars, caffeine and other not-so-healthy foods, setting you

up for a day of poor choices and irritable behavior.

Have fun getting ready

Enjoy getting ready for your day by first taking a relaxing shower. While you’re standing under

the warm water, imagine all of the stress of the day before melting off of your body and washing

down the drain. Once you’re feeling clean and refreshed, spend some time jamming to your

favorite uplifting music. Put on makeup, choose clothes that make you feel great, and do your

hair. My clients hear from me all the time that when you feel fabulous, you make fabulous

choices in your day!

Premier Protein Giveaway!!

PREMIER1

Ever since I was 8 years old, I remember watching my mom and my grandma drink “weight-loss” shakes.
They had those Slim Fast cans… remember those??

I’ve been intrigued by dieting and nutrition ever since and I’ve tried just about everything out there when it comes to protein shakes (my husband even works for a supplement company, so we have our share!!)

There are so many kinds of powders, but I do a lot of traveling, especially on the road, and its just not always convenient to have powder and dump in the water… and you DEF can NOT do it ahead of time (just trust me on this one)

I found Premier Protein, oh man… maybe 6 years ago? I used to get their bars at Costco and I remember taking them on a trip to Europe (which really came in handy when we didn’t like the food in Russia!!)

Anyway, on a recent road trip my hubby and I were on, I told him I was hungry and VOILA
he said there were shakes in the cooler!! (I married and handsome AND smart man)

PREMIER1

Premier Protein saw this and saw that a lot of you wanted to check these out too, so I hooked up a SWEET GIVEAWAY!!

Anyway, I have loved these shakes for a LONG time (much better than anything in a can)
but they recently reformulated them just a bit and now they taste even better.. cool.

So.. all you need to do is leave a COMMENT below (just a “I want!”)

  • 2 winners receive two 12-packs of shakes, one chocolate and one vanillaProductImage_PP_Shake_11oz_18ct_PTCar_ChocProductImage_PP_Shake_11oz_18ct_PTCar_VN

Pumpkin Cinnamon Swirl Protein Bread (GF)

Pumpkin Cinnamon Swirl Protein Bars

Need a delicious and healthy Breakfast or Snack Idea?

These bars are where its at!! Plus, you can’t go wrong with pumpkin….ever.

Its not quite paleo, because there are little bit of oats and protein, it’s as close to Paleo in a delicious bar as I’m gonna get today… They are moist and delicious!!

This recipe is adapted from my friend Jaquelyn Kay, who adapted it from Jamie Eason’s Cinnamon Swirl Bread.. so basically its a twice removed recipe from the star Jamie, herself 😉

All the ingredients you can get from the grocery, amazon pantry (with amazon prime), or make your own flours. (a little trick, for oat flout and almond flour, just put oats or almonds in a magic bullet… and VOILA!!)

GLUTEN-FREE

Preheat oven to 350.

Lightly grease your pan with olive oil (9×9 square pan works best)

In small bowl combine: (set aside)1/3 cup Truvia/Stevia Blend and 2 tsp cinnamon

  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 1/2 cup oat flour
  •  2 scoops vanilla whey protein (or banana flavored!!)
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt (regular or himalayan pink salt is fine)
  • 2 tbsp raw honey
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 whole egg
  • 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk
  • 1/2 c. pumpkin (you can use applesauce if you don’t like pumpkin or can’t find it)

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together  flours, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and protein powder.
In a medium bowl, whisk together egg and whites, coconut milk, honey, and pumpkin.

Pour a shallow layer of batter into the loaf pan (about 1/4 of the batter). Sprinkle heavily with half of the cinnamon/sugar mixture. Repeat with remaining batter & cinnamon/sugar on top. Draw a knife through the batter to marble. Bake for 25 minutes or until knife comes out clean when you poke the center of bread.

How to use a foam roller

How to use a foam roller

Foam Rollers are a great form of Self-Myofascial Release.

You may see many in the gym, white, blue, grey, bumpy ones, smooth ones and people rolling around like its fun

(I’m telling you, its not! LOL)

Foam rolling helps relieve muscle soreness and tension, loosens knots, allivates IT Band syndrome and helps with full range of motion and increasing mobility.
Its one of those love/hate things. I’ll be honest… its hard to “not be a bitch” when I’m lying on one… I whine, cry and all but curse my mother.

But afterward… wow! I’m a new woman!
Here are a few techniques I use and teach my clients for IT band, inner thighs, upper back, traps, lats and even feet for plantar fascitis.

The foam roller I use in this video is from The Pro Unit

How can I get rid of loose skin on my belly?

this picture is more likely a candidate for a tummy tuck ** always consult a board certified plastic surgeon and get more than one opinion**

I get emails with training and diet questions all the time. I also get this question (or version of it a lot)

<<<Q: I used to be a size 18 and now am a size 2. I eat clean, weight train and do cardio, but I still have this loose skin. How can I tighten  my belly?? (or I have loose skin after pregnancy)>>>

these stretch marks will not go away, but her skin most likely will still tighten more

There are many factors

*age

*amount of weight lost

*how long you were overweight

*how fast you gained the weight

*how fast you lost the weight

……….and a lot of genetics.

Some people gain and lose a ton of weight and have hardly any issues while others are covered in stretch marks and are trying to fix that sagging skin.

You can cry about it or just learn what you can do and accept what you can’t.

There are tips for preventing stretch marks; like cocoa butter and moisturizing, but honestly, if you’re bodies’ genetics are likely to get stretchmarks, no amount of cocoa butter is going to stop that. At this point, the damage is done. So….what is my answer for what you can do?

Assuming you already eat clean, lift-weights and “do what you’re supposed to”…. you may not like the answer.

Preparation-H does not work.

Saran Wrap does not work.

Crunches, reverse crunches, planks or any abdominal exercise you can think of will not work.

There are a few lasers (usually very painful, expensive, and not largely effective) that are available that MAY have some effect on small areas or small amounts of skin “wrinkling”

this picture is more likely a candidate for a tummy tuck ** always consult a board certified plastic surgeon and get more than one opinion**

The only true thing that can actually get RID of loose skin is a tummy tuck.

They actually CUT. IT. OFF.

Even this only works if you have a significant amount of skin…. annnnnnnnd $8-$10k and about 3 months to recover.

Sooooo–  the BEST thing you can do is: love yourself, don’t stress over it (its probably worse in your head) and think of it as a symbol of your hard work or your souvenir of your beautiful child or your hard work on losing the weight.

Surgery is a personal choice but realize that if you aren’t ok inside, it’s not going to fix everything. That being said, if you worked hard, there’s no reason you should be held back because of some loose skin.

Whatever you choose, be ok with that.

I would never judge and I’d be in line for a tummy-tuck if I worked my ass off to lose a bunch of weight and it was really bothering me.

We don’t all look/stay young forever.

Just be strong, be healthy, be beautiful.
and sorry I wish I had some better tips… but I am here to tell you the truth, not what you want to hear. Please Leave your comments!

you are MORE than some silly scars :)

How to travel 45,000 miles in a year…. or just get out of town

new3

TRAVEL

Its been no secret that I have been on the road for the last 3 months.
As fun and exciting as it has been, I am definitely glad to be home with my awesome husband and pups.

I do get asked quite often how I am able to do it/afford it, etc. and I got an email from a young family member the other day asking this:

“How were you able to travel as much as you did in a single year? Money, time, obligation-wise etc. I’d like to know since it is one of my goals to travel when young because I’ve read that it should be something you should do to expand your world.”

Here was my response:

  • Tuesday
  • Danny J Johnson

    12/3, 11:12pm

     Danny J Johnson

hey cutie!!! thank you so much! well, I have been able to travel so much for a few reasons

#1. I have an online business….that is probably the single most important piece. I actually have a few businesses, but all of them only require a phone and wi-fi

#2. I have an extremely supportive husband and have to plan a bit to take care of our animals when I’m gone, but the dogs are probably my biggest obligation… luckily we can find a sitter pretty easily when needed.

#3. As far as money goes: I don’t make a lot, but I don’t spend foolishly. I budget for travel and Nate and I put 10% out of all we earn into a travel fund, just for vacation… I’ve also been able to travel by having some companies or events pay for me… so it was basically free. I also own my car instead of having a car payment and I try to keep my expenses low. We live debt free and try to keep it that way.

#4. When I travel I try to find cheap ways to stay, like airbnb.com or staying with friends who I’ve met online

#5. I look for deals on airfare; I get emails from southwest.com and orbitz.com and I pay attention to flights and airfare sales

and I agree, I think EVERY young person should travel. I was able to spend some time in Europe when I was 20, 21, 22 and it was amazing! and I STILL continue to travel when I can.

What do you all think? Do you have any more questions? Do you like to travel? Is it a priority or do you love to stay close to home? I’m super curious as I know that we all have such different lifestyles.

Any tips for the rest of us to save money on travel or to budget it?
