Always in Beta Lifestyle with New Balance

Consideration was provided by New Balance

I’ve always been inspired by women with stories of challenge and triumph. One of my first and favorite books I ever read was called, “Don’t You Dare Give Up,” a book about a gymnast who was paralyzed doing the sport she loved, but out of her tragedy she reinvented herself, and continued to inspire and work in other ways. I am a student of personal development. I am constantly looking to improve my lifestyle in so many ways, and always looking for something that can make just that 1% change. I am “always in beta.”

“Always in Beta. Beta is a state of relentless improvement. Where there is no finish line to what’s possible. We dream. We wake up. And improve upon yesterday.”

I am teaming up with New Balance to promote women who also live the “Always in Beta” Lifestyle. The new Fall Catalog is packed with awesome new gear, but also lots of women’s stories that will inspire you, push you, and motivate you!

If you download the Blippar App, you can Blipp the page to see awesome content, videos and get to know the NB Women and their stories in a really cool way!   I was obsessed with this new collection, especially the colors and feel of the NB Ice Collection!   The contrast of the blues and bright yellows makes me feel unstoppable!!

The Capris have an awesome, wide and flattering waistband and feel amazing on my skin.

Let’s talk bras. Let’s get real here, sports bras are my best friend, but I don’t always like how they can smash everything and make me look like I wasted $4000 on a boob job (hahaha) The “Tenderly Obsessive” bra is seriously genius. I need one for every day of the week.

First, it’s cute and matches my hot shorts. (Bonus) There is a soft, shaped, cup on each side, with a nice bit of padding for smoothness (but not those awful removable pads that bunch up and you can never fit back in!!) It’s comfortable, stylish and gives great support and lift. #winner Speaking of shorts. I’ve never been a shorts kind of girl. Mostly because I was too worried about things being squeezed and creating more bulges and bumps than necessary. The Premium Performance Hot Shorts are so flattering, with the wide waistband, great coverage, and they stay put when running or stretching.

Last, it’s fall, and I LOVE the weather and cozy, soft sweaters, jackets and windbreakers. New Balance nailed it with the Heat En Route Jacket; it’s gorgeous, comfy, has the fun thumbholes that I love and feels so soft!

I’m so excited for fall hiking, long walks, trail running and pumpkin lattes and of course, Always Living in Beta. What are you excited for this fall and what pushes you to always live the Beta Lifestyle?     WE THE WOMEN of New Balance have created this collection of fitness apparel and footwear inspired by our shared LOVE OF SPORT, drive to discover what’s next, and passion for WHAT’S POSSIBLE. Welcome to NB WOMEN where every tight fits right, every layer works hard, and every shoes lets you moved with perfect freedom. Take a look and find WHAT YOU LOVE.

Walk Out Wednesdays

Sooo I’ve been living in a van….. down by the river, for a good 8 months now.

Alright, so it’s an RV and it’s not really by a River, but still.

I spend a LOT of time working in a small space, and while it’s fun, I’ve been really neglecting my fitness, because I “don’t have a gym or space”

Then my trainer head was like

“WHOA NELLY!! Stop right there! You have all you need with your shoes and two legs”

However, have I mentioned, I hate running?

So, I was asked to do a product review of the new Omron Alvita Wireless Activity Tracker (HJ-327T)

Our most advanced tracker yet, the Omron Alvita Wireless Activity Tracker (HJ-327T) is petite yet powerful. It allows you to transfer your fitness data wirelessly to your smartphone with our free Omron Fitness App. Featuring Bluetooth® Smart technology, the Alvita Wireless Tracker records regular steps, aerobic steps, distance and calories burned so you can set realistic goals and check progress along the way

I was actually REALLY excited about this little gadget because I needed a little push. I wanted to see how this baby worked and I ripped it open and went straight for the instructions….

OK, I admit, I freak out at gadgety things… BUT this was so easy. The instructions were basically: pop in a battery. Download an app. Now WALK!!!

OMG OMG. I have never been so excited to get out since my first pedometer in 7th grade! I grabbed my two #dogjerks and told my hubby “you’re coming with me!!” and off we went!!

I had to fight the urge to keep looking at it and checking my phone to see my progress. It certainly was fun to see how it shows your activity by time of day.

I realize that between taking care of work, my pups my husband, etc. I don’t always leave much time for myself and I forget how good FRESH AIR and a quick walk feels.

The hubs and I got to chat and reconnect and it was FUN.

Omron is encouraging women like us to #walkoutwednesdays where we schedule a walk with a friend and get out there on Wednesdays!

Why is it important to walk with a friend and not alone?

Many studies have shown that working out with a partner or group of people encourages you to stay on track and motivated. Many people choose to workout with someone who lives within close proximity.

I am excited to see how I can increase my daily activity and also reconnect with a friend or my husband once a week, just getting outside.

The awesome thing about this little tracker is that it is only $40!

It syncs to your phone and you can also sign up for a free account at where you can:

  • Download and share fitness activity from their personal dashboard
  • Participate in fitness and other health challenges
  • Easily view data on a mobile device or PC
  • The website syncs with the Alvita and our new line of connected blood pressure monitors where you can analyze your data, set goals and track your health progress

If you want to see more, make sure to find OMRON on FACEBOOK or go to their website

How to make time for healthy activities every day

Maybe you’ve noticed, or maybe you haven’t been around me long enough to notice, but I have made a huge, huge shift in the way I do fitness.

I have started to really look inside and do what feels right to me.

I used to be this hard-core, “no excuses” maniac, who didn’t believe that anyone who wanted something couldn’t go out and get it!! (I still believe that if you want something you can make it happen)

However, I now have realized, the hard way, that too much pushing, not enough ALLOWING can pretty much, well, get your panties in a bunch!

You can become no-fun, too serious, and actually less healthy!!

(ain’t nobody got time for that!!)

There is a big world out there and all kinds of people. There are all kinds of fitness and all kinds of food and ways to eat and stay healthy and active.

I actually took nearly TWO FULL YEARS off of what most people would consider “working out”… at least in the sense of how I used to work out.

I decided, it was best for me, to just make time for healthy activity.

Some of that actually meant: RESTING.

When I was overworked, tired, sick and sore, in the past, I would just tell myself to “suck it up”

This ultimately led to burn out and a whole bunch of hormonal rebounds.

Ultimately, just staying active has helped me maintain my physique, my relationships and my sanity!

I’m excited to team up with Stayfree® to share how I am able to stay calm, cool, and collected while staying active.

Here are some of my best tips on making time for healthy activities:

  • Think outside the box!! – we think we have to “go to the gym” to have a workout. Not so!! I started doing a lot more from home– climbing the stairs to my apartments 25 times and then some push-ups on the counter– a little goes a long way!
  • Opposite Day Workout - sometimes, we have SO much stress in our lives- work, kids, traffic, etc. the last thing we need is another high intensity workout to raise cortisol even MORE. Take a walk. Take a yoga class in person or online. Breathe and let go.
  • Use your breaks wisely- if there is little time between leaving work, picking up one child, dropping off another, etc. Make those water breaks or lunch breaks count!! Walking lunges, parking far away, a few squats while waiting on hold. Make the extra minutes count!
  • PLAY – My newest, most fun way to get some activity in, is to blast Pandora and dance!! Playing is so fun and laughing is the best ab workout I have found! Make life and fitness enjoyable and it will be easy!

What are some ways that you stay calm, cool and connected during your busy life?

Holiday Gift Guide for the Fitness Freak

“What do you want for Christmas?”

I always HATED that question.
I’m not good at coming up with what I want, but then again, I make an amazon wish list all year long.
So, I decided to see what was on my list, but also some of the cool things I have been using all year that you may want to ask for or get for your other fitness girl friends.

I admit it, I am a personal development junkie. I have had to reprogram many years of BS, so I’m always looking to keep my thoughts toward positive and I also love to continue learning. I love books about health and fitness and about leadership too. Here are some of my favorites and some on my wish list

The Slight Edge (must read for everyone.)

fitness, health, business, relationships.. here is the answer. Easy Read too.

The Miracle Morning– I have NOT yet read this book, but I am always trying to get up earlier and make my mornings better (I’m NOT a morning person) so I really want to read this and have a better morning routine. Plus… I love miracles :)
I also heard a podcast interview with the author and I was really impressed… so there’s that.

50 Ways to Say You’re Awesome– this book just seems like the perfect gift to give to some of your AWESOME friends!

Fitmark Bags Meal Management Bags- as much as I travel. I MUST bring my own food. It gets WAY too expensive to eat out all the time and definitely can be so tempting to eat junk. I LOVE all the Fitmark Bags, in fact, this is my second one (a little larger) it has everything you need and is TSA compliant with the frozen pouches (Issues I had before!!)
AND you can get 15% off by using the code: danny15 at checkout.. SWEET!!

FLIP BELT– cool running belt to keep your ID, keys, extra cash, etc. on you while running!! I hate leaving my house and having to run with keys in my hands…among other things! This thing is an awesome gift for girls and guys! Lot’s of colors and looks cute!

Ninja Professional Blender or a Vitamix — ok.. so I can’t LIVE without my blenders. LOVE smoothies and of course I never hear complaints about the Vitamix, the cost can be prohibitive. I LOVE my Ninja, just be careful, those blades are sharp!!
It is a MUST-HAVE for a healthy lifestyle!!

Pull-Up Bar-- you just have to have one in your house. Pull-ups are badass.

MPG Tote- gorgeous gym or travel bag. I want.

Fit Bit and Samsung Gear Fit– these are just a few of many fitness trackers. I know Nike Fuel Band is hot… but I LOVE Fit Bit because of the simplicity and color options. I also love the new Samsung, because.. its just bad ass. Let me know if you get one :)

“I am a Sweaty Betty/ Don’t Be a B!tch” Sweatshirts– hey! It’s winter.. they’re comfy, cute, and you get to tell people #DBAB What’s not to love?! (There are multiple colors and tanks too!)

MPG Sport (Mondetta Performance Gear)– I can never forget MPG. There are consistently one of my favorite brands for quality and price. They always have new collections and great sales a few times a year too!

(I have this jacket below in white.. it’s gorgeous!!)

Dry Shampoo- I CAN’T live without this stuff now! There are a ton of great brands out there, but you can’t go wrong with $3 Suave. Great to keep in your gymbag after a blow dry, just a quick spritz to freshen up and it’s even great after you wash to give your hair a little more volume!!

Pacifica Purify Coconut Water Cleansing Wipes - I got these at the Fitness Magazine Meet & Tweet event and I am OBSESSED!! Also found a fun kit with BB Cream, Lip color and the wipes!

Nerium AD Gift Set (Day/Night or Day/Night/Body)- if you’ve followed me for the last year, you may have seen mine and my friends and families AMAZING results with Nerium. This stuff if LEGIT. Discoloration, fine lines, wrinkles, pore size.. it helps. Also the new Nerium Firm works wonders on stretched pregnancy skin, loose skin from weight loss and the appearance of cellulite. The total body gift set (you can also just get the day/night experience for face)

Canada and Mexico too!!

Ear Buds– these are a MUST for cardio (gotta keep the beat on your run!!) I have tried all kinds but YurBuds have a great fit and reasonable price. Cute and easy stocking stuffer!!

Bodyworks Ball– this little gym bag gadget is amazing!! I’m always getting knots in my shoulder blades which are SO hard to reach. I used to lie on the ground on a ball, but gosh darn it, sometimes getting on the floor is a little… questionable?
So this cool ball you can toss over your shoulder and get to those hard to reach places. There are a ton of great uses.

MODERE Laundry Pods– I know this is kind of random, but someone sent these to me as a gift, and since we have been living in the RV and going to a lot of laudromats, you have no idea how convenient these are!! They smell AMAZING, are very portable and efficient. I need more!!

Pumpkin Cinnamon Swirl Protein Bread (GF)

Pumpkin Cinnamon Swirl Protein Bars

Need a delicious and healthy Breakfast or Snack Idea?

These bars are where its at!! Plus, you can’t go wrong with pumpkin….ever.

Its not quite paleo, because there are little bit of oats and protein, it’s as close to Paleo in a delicious bar as I’m gonna get today… They are moist and delicious!!

This recipe is adapted from my friend Jaquelyn Kay, who adapted it from Jamie Eason’s Cinnamon Swirl Bread.. so basically its a twice removed recipe from the star Jamie, herself ;)

All the amazing ingredients you can get from VITACOST. They have a freaking AWESOME selection of things like coconut flour and greens, etc. (watch out, my cart was full in about .5 seconds!!)

Preheat oven to 350.

Lightly grease your pan with olive oil (9×9 square pan works best)

In small bowl combine: (set aside)1/3 cup Truvia and 2 tsp cinnamon

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together  flours, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and protein powder.
In a medium bowl, whisk together egg and whites, coconut milk, honey, and pumpkin.

Pour a shallow layer of batter into the loaf pan (about 1/4 of the batter). Sprinkle heavily with half of the cinnamon/sugar mixture. Repeat with remaining batter & cinnamon/sugar on top. Draw a knife through the batter to marble. Bake for 25 minutes or until knife comes out clean when you poke the center of bread.

EPSON scanner image

I have a friend who I met through the internet (as I have met MANY of you!!)
His name is Adam and he has been working on a project for quite awhile now.
What I love about Adam is that his product is more than just a cool drink (which it is!!)

It is about his STORY and how he turned Lemons into… well…. LÉMONESSE.™

(keep reading below but also check out my instagram to see me trying it for the first time!!)

Check out his KickStarter campaign and his story below:

When Live Gives You Lemons Turn Them Into LÉMONESSE.™ When one door closes another opens. LÉMONESSE™ was born after I was involved in a life-changing drunk driving accident. I starting playing baseball when I just just 5 years old.  Essentially I lived, breathed and ate baseball.  After years of blood, sweat and tears I was playing college baseball and on a path to a hopeful professional career. While in college I returned home for Christmas break to see my older brother who had returned from his military service in Iraq. On a quiet December night, our family was headed to Church when a drunk driver crossed the median and hit my brother and I head on. My Mom, Dad, younger brother, and sister all watched this unfold in the car ahead of them.My baseball dreams were crushed. I suffered multiple surgeries as a result of the accident.  I was forced to re-focus my dreams and aspirations. I decided to take the passion that I had for baseball and my desire to become a professional athlete and put it into an entrepreneurial journey that would teach me more about life, love, and lemons than I ever could have imagined.

If you want to find MORE about LÉMONESSE.™ follow ALL of their social media! and tell Adam hello and great job!!

Here’s Some Lemon Facts

There are numerous health benefits of lemons. Listed below are 3 Reasons You Should Be Drinking Lemon Water on a Daily Basis.

1) Overall Bodily Health

Lemon juice helps to flush out unwanted toxins from the body. Lemons contain high levels of antioxidants called bioflavonoids. Research shows that bioflavonoids may modify allergens, viruses, and carcinogens. Lemon water contains very little calories if any and also helps you stay hydrated by adding a healthy flavoring to your water. A simple shot of lemon can spruce up that boring old water and add a wealth of benefits.

2) Balances pH Levels

Contrary to what most people believe lemon water, although acidic in nature, is actually treated by the body as a base once ingested. We consume an over-abundance of acidic foods thus lowering our bodies pH level. Our body is constantly working to maintain homeostasis and by eating too many acidic foods we aren’t helping our bodies to maintain the desired 7.4 pH level. Lemon water can help the body maintain a homeostatic state by alkalizing the blood and reversing the effects of highly acidic foods.

3) Digestive Boost

A study in the “International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition.” released in 2011 stated that taste receptors for bitter substances trigger your pancreas to secrete digestive enzymes and your gall bladder to release bile. This helps the digestive process along and makes the process of eliminating waste products from the body easier.

4) Scurvy treatment

Scurvy is caused by a vitamin C deficiency. Scurvy causes general weakness, anemia, gum disease, and skin hemorrhages.

5) Gall/Kidney Stone Reduction

The citric acid in lemon juice assists in dissolving gallstones, calcium deposits, and kidney stones.

6) Antibacterial

Lemons have powerful antibacterial properties; lemon juice has been found to assist in the degradation of bacteria of diseases such as malaria, cholera, diphtheria, typhoid as well as others.

7) Acne treatment

The alkalizing effect of lemons aid in the reduction of the bacteria known to cause acne.

8) Freshen Breath

A breath of freshness. Lemons and warm water can help freshen breath.

9) Digestion Help

Drinking a glass of lemon water with a meal can help stimulate the production of stomach acid which can aid in the digestion process.

10) Assist in Weight Loss Lemons contain a soluble fiber called pectin that has been shown to help with weight loss. Another great benefit of lemons aiding in weight loss comes by adding lemon to your water. This adds flavor without the calories. In addition you can reap all the other health benefits lemons bring to your body.

How to use a foam roller

How to use a foam roller

Foam Rollers are a great form of Self-Myofascial Release.

You may see many in the gym, white, blue, grey, bumpy ones, smooth ones and people rolling around like its fun

(I’m telling you, its not! LOL)

Foam rolling helps relieve muscle soreness and tension, loosens knots, allivates IT Band syndrome and helps with full range of motion and increasing mobility.
Its one of those love/hate things. I’ll be honest… its hard to “not be a bitch” when I’m lying on one… I whine, cry and all but curse my mother.

But afterward… wow! I’m a new woman!
Here are a few techniques I use and teach my clients for IT band, inner thighs, upper back, traps, lats and even feet for plantar fascitis.

The foam roller I use in this video is from The Pro Unit

How can I get rid of loose skin on my belly?

this picture is more likely a candidate for a tummy tuck ** always consult a board certified plastic surgeon and get more than one opinion**

I get emails with training and diet questions all the time. I also get this question (or version of it a lot)

<<<Q: I used to be a size 18 and now am a size 2. I eat clean, weight train and do cardio, but I still have this loose skin. How can I tighten  my belly?? (or I have loose skin after pregnancy)>>>

these stretch marks will not go away, but her skin most likely will still tighten more

There are many factors

*amount of weight lost

*how long you were overweight

*how fast you gained the weight

*how fast you lost the weight

……….and a lot of genetics.

Some people gain and lose a ton of weight and have hardly any issues while others are covered in stretch marks and are trying to fix that sagging skin.

You can cry about it or just learn what you can do and accept what you can’t.

There are tips for preventing stretch marks; like cocoa butter and moisturizing, but honestly, if you’re bodies’ genetics are likely to get stretchmarks, no amount of cocoa butter is going to stop that. At this point, the damage is done. So….what is my answer for what you can do?

Assuming you already eat clean, lift-weights and “do what you’re supposed to”…. you may not like the answer.

Preparation-H does not work.

Saran Wrap does not work.

Crunches, reverse crunches, planks or any abdominal exercise you can think of will not work.

There are a few lasers (usually very painful, expensive, and not largely effective) that are available that MAY have some effect on small areas or small amounts of skin “wrinkling”

this picture is more likely a candidate for a tummy tuck ** always consult a board certified plastic surgeon and get more than one opinion**

The only true thing that can actually get RID of loose skin is a tummy tuck.

They actually CUT. IT. OFF.

Even this only works if you have a significant amount of skin…. annnnnnnnd $8-$10k and about 3 months to recover.

Sooooo–  the BEST thing you can do is: love yourself, don’t stress over it (its probably worse in your head) and think of it as a symbol of your hard work or your souvenir of your beautiful child or your hard work on losing the weight.

Surgery is a personal choice but realize that if you aren’t ok inside, it’s not going to fix everything. That being said, if you worked hard, there’s no reason you should be held back because of some loose skin.

Whatever you choose, be ok with that.

I would never judge and I’d be in line for a tummy-tuck if I worked my ass off to lose a bunch of weight and it was really bothering me.

We don’t all look/stay young forever.

Just be strong, be healthy, be beautiful.
and sorry I wish I had some better tips… but I am here to tell you the truth, not what you want to hear. Please Leave your comments!

How to travel 45,000 miles in a year…. or just get out of town

Its been no secret that I have been on the road for the last 3 months.
As fun and exciting as it has been, I am definitely glad to be home with my awesome husband and pups.

I do get asked quite often how I am able to do it/afford it, etc. and I got an email from a young family member the other day asking this:

“How were you able to travel as much as you did in a single year? Money, time, obligation-wise etc. I’d like to know since it is one of my goals to travel when young because I’ve read that it should be something you should do to expand your world.”

Here was my response:

  • Tuesday
  • Danny J Johnson

hey cutie!!! thank you so much! well, I have been able to travel so much for a few reasons

#1. I have an online business….that is probably the single most important piece. I actually have a few businesses, but all of them only require a phone and wi-fi

#2. I have an extremely supportive husband and have to plan a bit to take care of our animals when I’m gone, but the dogs are probably my biggest obligation… luckily we can find a sitter pretty easily when needed.

#3. As far as money goes: I don’t make a lot, but I don’t spend foolishly. I budget for travel and Nate and I put 10% out of all we earn into a travel fund, just for vacation… I’ve also been able to travel by having some companies or events pay for me… so it was basically free. I also own my car instead of having a car payment and I try to keep my expenses low. We live debt free and try to keep it that way.

#4. When I travel I try to find cheap ways to stay, like or staying with friends who I’ve met online

#5. I look for deals on airfare; I get emails from and and I pay attention to flights and airfare sales

and I agree, I think EVERY young person should travel. I was able to spend some time in Europe when I was 20, 21, 22 and it was amazing! and I STILL continue to travel when I can.

What do you all think? Do you have any more questions? Do you like to travel? Is it a priority or do you love to stay close to home? I’m super curious as I know that we all have such different lifestyles.
Any tips for the rest of us to save money on travel or to budget it?
